Nell Mitchell (b. 1998) is an artist based in East London, whose confessional, stream of conscious practice uses humour and vivid imagery to convey raw emotions. Having graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2020, Nell is currently studying for a masters in Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School. She creates cathartic work that is both relatable and deeply personal, regarding each individual piece of work as a window to the soul, with no holds barred. Mitchell’s work is not at all dissimilar to that of a diary; as times passes it is increasingly becoming the primary way in which she journeys through and processes life. Using light-heartedness in her practise allows her to convey herself completely through a piece of work, which as an introvert, who at times feels the pressures of the world around her as a person in her 20s just a little bit too overwhelming, the ultimate aim is to allow a person to understand and know her as a person through her artwork alone.
“I am driven by an intense desire to validate smaller moments of calm and rest, alongside bigger and heavier themes, thus using my work as a vessel in not shying away from mental health issues like anxiety and depression. So, ultimately my work is a way in which I take control of these parts of my life, hugging them in tightly and giving them the attention and worth that they deserve. Luckily, sometimes this process leaves me with work that carries me through life as a companion, that can maybe even bring comfort to somebody else going through similar things to me.”
